My most frequent commissions are portraits. While there is generally less room for artistic expression in a portrait, you cannot help but find unique opportunities for creativity in every new face you draw. I spent the summer of my Freshman year of college drawing hundreds of faces at Cedar Point, in Sandusky Ohio. It was one of the toughest, yet best experiences of my life. Never have I been so attached to the drawing board, and never have I so critically used my eyes when drawing. I was able to make out the deepest, most wonderful expressions of the human face. That time has allotted me the experience I desperately needed during my training in college, to produce lifelike, animated faces. Here are a few recent pieces:

I have to admit, my absolute favorite subjects to draw are characters. And not just any sort of characters, I love monsters, gremlins, burly animals with goofy faces and sharp teeth. You wouldn’t know it to look at me, but I’ve a rather wild imagination when it comes to storybook villains. I say, give me a body with character any day over something cute, or even beautiful. I like that hint of ugliness and oddity that sets my characters apart from the rest. This character is the product of my first attempt with gouache paints. I painted the following character with dip pen and watercolor. I love the way the line stands out strong from the colors and shades. Finally, this alien is a good friend of mine. I drew him quite a while ago, but I’m still rather fond of him. I drew him in pencil, then made several photo copies and colored him with prismacolor pencils and added highlights with gesso.

Some of the exercises I do to keep my work fresh are to simply copy images out of books and magazines I might have laying about. I went to the library and raided the children’s section to give me a stack of fresh material to work from. Simply using the internet for reference tends to give you small, stale images that are overused. While I don’t intend to use this for professional work, it’s nice to have something I can quickly reference, rather than trekking out to nature to find a tree frog. (which I am not likely to find)

I also recently visited the Palm Beach Zoo with my mother and brother. We captured hundreds of pictures, some of which I’ve taken the time to illustrate. My favorite is an image of a monkey looking like he’s lost in an inspirational moment. I completed this image in gouache, a medium that is fairly new to me, that is proving to be my “missing link.” It’s a step somewhere between watercolor and acrylic. It’s flatter than acrylic, yet remains brilliant enough for my liking. I’ve experimented a bit with it, trying to apply it more like watercolor, and then like acrylic. It really is a medium unto it’s own, however, and I may find that I favor it. I feel like it leans towards pastels when I finally step away from the completed piece. (compare my first image of the frog, with the monkey picture) I really admire the way Tony DiTerlizzi applies the medium, and I’d like to emulate that to a degree. Stay tuned for more~
